Winter in Australia is never dull, from planting, pruning and growing those winter vegetables, here are our top tips to keep your garden alive, whether you’re an avid green thumb or you want a fun weekend activity, our winter gardening tips will have your garden thriving and flourishing in the coming weeks.
Winter pruning
A tedious job many people like to put off, tackle this headfirst and you’ll thank yourself all Winter. The cooler weather is the perfect time to prune and structure your young trees, as they have no leaves, the tree can easily be seen, making it easier to see what you’re doing but also getting the tree prepped for the coming seasons and promoting growth for new flowers to bloom.
If you have a rose garden, you want to be looking at July onwards for the optimal time to prune. Other plants to prune when bare are hydrangeas, gardenias and frangipanis. Your cup of tea will be well worth it…job done!
Winter seeds to plant
The change in seasons is the best time to mix up your veggie patch, or better yet start a new one and make the most of the moist soil type. After pruning your existing fruit trees, this is also the best time to buy new ones to put in the ground too. At this time of year there are many plants to choose from, including carrots, broccoli and spinach, however if you want some more to add some florals, consider the enormous range of rose varieties, fruit trees and flowering trees. The herbs which love this extra rainfall is thyme, rosemary, parsley basil and mint. If you’re ever stuck, head on down to your local nursery and they will be able to give you their advice on what to plant!
Garden jobs
Winter is a perfect time to tackle those jobs which have been on your to-do list for a while now…the ones which keep getting pushed back every time the weekend rolls around.
Get stuck into your weeds; with rain comes weeds. Make sure you remove them before they mature and take over your whole garden!
Rearrange your garden; You may want to move some things around to make it more accessible, whether it’s changing the location of some pots or finding a sunnier spot. This is a chance to fix the hose or repot the plant which you’ve been putting off for months now.
Feed your lawn; It’s important to give your lawn some love by feeding the soil. This helps keep the micro-organisms nourished and can improve your lawns resilience. Some fertiliser goes down a treat.
Start something new
A new season is the perfect time for a change, so why not sit down (with a cuppa in hand) and plan for how you’d like to mix up your garden. You may want to incorporate a new theme or design, or focus on getting more wildlife into your space, such as birds and bees which will do wonders for the outdoor area. Maybe it’s time to build a sandpit for the little ones or start a veggie patch? This is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon and do some research.
