Congratulations! You’ve secured your block and you’re one step closer to holding those sparkly new house keys.

Owning a new home comes along with the big task of packing up your old life and getting ready to move into your new abode. You may already be experiencing the stress of finalising the finer details of your new home, and moving day may be at the back of your mind, but if you use our tips and plan ahead, it will help create a more enjoyable experience.

We’re here to help make your move to Claravale Hilbert as smooth and efficient as possible.

Plan with removalists

Once you have a date locked in, call around to find the best quote possible. Removalists are very competitive, and shopping around with plenty of time in advance gives you more freedom to find a company suited to your budget and timeline. It may seem like a task you’d rather put off, but spending 10 minutes after work each day putting together a shortlist of quotes can reap benefits – you may very well save yourself some pennies to put towards furnishing the new place.

Focus on packing up one area of the home each weekend

It may feel overwhelming to pack up your old house, and studies show that moving house is one of the most stressful life events (understandably). The daunting thought of packing up each little thing can give anyone anxiety and a sense of overwhelm. One trick is to start small and tackle each room rather than doing it all in one go. If you plan and give yourself plenty of time, spend weekends or spare time working through one room. This way you can really focus on the contents and have a chance to be ruthless as you go. Start with the rooms which aren’t used as regularly - for example the theatre or study - then work up to the kitchen closer to moving day.

Use online buy and sell pages

The beauty of having technology at our fingertips is being able to give our things to another home. Instead of chucking it on the verge or at landfill sites, use local community pages on social media where you can either post for free or sell for a small price. Pages such as Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or local Facebook groups are an easy and efficient way to sell those things which are too good to just chuck away. After all, one man’s trash is another’s treasure…

Colour code your boxes

If you decide to pack up early, colour coding your boxes is a helpful way to streamline your unpacking at the other end. For each room, use coloured paper or sticky notes to write what’s in each box, keeping the colour aligned with each room. When it comes to unpacking, simply deliver the right coloured box to the right spot and everything is in its correct place.

Place heavy items in a suitcase

A simple but effective trick! Use your suitcase by putting heavier things in it, like books or keepsakes. This way, it’s easier to carry them without risking boxes falling apart and it’s an effective way of moving more than one thing at a time.
